Drummer on the hunt: five albums of drummers-leaders according to professionals
Most of the musicians ‘ jokes are about drummers and bassists. The rhythm section is an eternal source for exercises in homegrown humor. Themselves they-guys, typically, silent and calm (although very powerful physically). They don’t go anywhere. They are content with brief solos. But when the bass player or drummer is the leader, something out of the ordinary happens.
How to start getting acquainted with the projects of drummers-leaders? I asked famous Moscow drummers-professionals to name their favorite albums, and everyone, by the way, made a reservation: I don’t listen to drums, I listen to music. I also listened to their professional recommendations. The result is a list of interesting albums — not only with killer rhythms, but also beautiful melodies!
Billy Cobham “a Funky Thide of Sings” Billy Cobham is one of the leading drummers in jazz history. And his main album is considered to be “Spectrum”. In our review, Igor Javad-zadeh called this album his favorite, and many would agree with him. This is really a phenomenal work — in its time, a lot of different unique things have come together — for example, Deep Purple guitarist Tomi Bolin plays there, so here! Well, the music of course-some hits. Exemplary jazz-rock.But we will note the album is more fun, hooligan (including a playful cover and distorted title) and sexy — this is “a Funky Thide of Sings”. This is what is called “Zhyr” through the letter y-melodic, emotional, hot… etc. Everyone is dancing!Apple.Music, Yandex.Music, Deezer
Max Roach “Jazz in 3/4 Time” On this 1957 album, as stated in the title — jazz in the size of 3/4. For that time, a bold experiment – after Dave Brubeck (album Time Out 1959), jazz learned to swing in any size at all, something was in the air-everyone wanted “curves” sizes.Max roach, being one of the greatest jazzmen in General and just the king of the drum set, here is so interesting “shakes” that just dizzy from ambiguity: really some tricky rhythms, swinging, with “dips”. Here is like on three accounts, but so immediately and not tell. The way these simple and vital melodies (original by roach, Sonny Rollins and standards) are played in a waltz — like way is simply brilliant, Strauss would have envied! In addition, the soloists — BOP stars Sonny Rollins and Kenny Dorham.Apple.Music, Yandex.Music, Deezer
Tony Williams “Lifetime: the Collection” of the Great Tony Williams, who was knocking at miles Davis and many other luminaries, was advised by Sasha Mashin and vibraphonist/drummer Anatoly Tekuchev. Choice Machine-collection “Lifetime: The Collection”, Tekucheva – “Wilderness”.Both are worth listening to. Start with the collection — it is representative and clear. So, it opens with the piece “Snake Oil” (from the 1975 album “Believe It”) — some surprisingly modern thing, more rock and funk than fusion! The bass’s hammering riff with a DAB is even reminiscent of Queen’s 1980 hit “Another One Bites the Dust “(it’s possible that” reminds ” is no accident). Well, all the other tracks there are just as timeless, original and positive.Apple.Music, Yandex.Music, Deezer
Bill Bruford’s Earthworks “Earthworks”what is good about practitioners — the fact that they will recommend something unusual. Vladimir ” big ” Glushko chose an album that didn’t seem to be from jazz: the bill Bruford project (Yes, King Crimson, Genesis) of 1999.Bruford, in addition to being an excellent drummer with his own sound and light swing, is a songwriter and composer himself. His “Earthworks” – a normal acoustic” BOP ” Quartet in composition-is stylistically somewhere between prog rock and hard BOP — so you can not immediately determine. But the fact is that there are bright melodies, hot improvisations and easy drive. In transparent, “breathing” arrangements.Apple.Music, Yandex.Music, Deezer
Benny Greb “Grebfruit”Blues-rock alternative drummer Denis Lipatov drew our attention to the project of German benny Greb “Grabefruit”, which we have already written about once. An excellent example of “alternative” modern jazz – with a groove, broken rhythms and unexpected sounds, timbres, and textures in a jazz context.Greb’s first solo album (2005) — his singing (a Cappella with overdubs) plus drums. At least — curious. And as a maximum-interesting music with imagination.
