Tales for adults: four new albums with unexpected genres
By January, many artists are preparing either albums of new year’s songs, or something very special that may not work without the festive hype. So, both the final of the year and the first month of 2019 were pleased with interesting finds. Here you will find veterans of the Russian rock scene with ironic songs, folk-rockers with psychedelic tales, The Beatles in avant-garde costumes and Gregory porter reincarnated as NAT king Cole.
Eugene Margulis ” Back and forth!”Let’s start with a big name, but not for the sake of hype, and justice for. In the final of last year, Eugene Margulis released another solo album, which is so bluesy and homely kind that it would be unfair to miss it. It is believed that a few years ago Margulis left the “time Machine” for the sake of a solo career (did someone in the group prevent him from going to the side?). Not that he has since been a frequent performer on albums, but what he releases is straight out of “Russian Stevie wonder”, as one of his young collaborators put it about him.
Nice melodies, clever ironic verses, sung freely-don’t care, soft sound. The atmosphere is like a friend in the kitchen, but very professional. The same applies to the sound and the game (a wonderful “old school” trumpet with a mute in “tango-mango”; a dirty Blues guitar and a wheezing harmonica in “the Serpent”). Bad luck in our country with adult smart pop-rock. Margulis partially closes this gap.
Apple.Music, Yandex.Music, Deezersbornik “A Day In The Life: Impressions Of Pepper” No, I am aware that the dish called “Beatles in jazz” is already sick! But it is good when the dish is prepared quite radically, as in the recipes of molecular cuisine of some kind. That is: all to separate, and there as it will turn out!In this particular album, you won’t hear sweet versions of Lennon-McCartney-Harrison tunes. The melodies are all uprooted. There is also Marie Halvorson (“With a Little Help…”) on the detonating guitar. There is a Mature Anthony Sanchez, who turned the title track and its Reprise into grunge practically. And so on and so forth. But the Beatles ‘ spirit is madness, an experiment, an anti — commercial artistic pose — that’s what it is. Let’s even say that the album is about atmosphere. This is The Beatles as the basis for modern jazz, and there is no contradiction here: the Beatles laid and developed the atmosphere of dream-pop-psychedelia, and modern intellectual jazz including these yeast rose. By the way, I remember that in Russia at the dawn of the noughties there was a double CD with radical electronic noise remakes of Beatles songs, where the well-organized cacophony of “Revolution # 9″took center stage. Lennon would have loved it. Probably.Apple.Music, Yandex.Music, DeezerGregory Porter “One Night Only | Live At the Royal Albert Hall” Remember the main — well, name another! — vocal album of the past year. The success of a Studio CD with songs by NAT king Cole finally cemented porter’s status as a Major jazz Singer. Now he can do anything, including sing someone else’s songs and give out any tributes to anyone. And he moved forward, we recall, thanks to the original material with difficult verses. So, the first live album in Gregory porter’s discography was recorded at the prestigious London albert hall. Released by the prestigious Blue Note. Everything is like the big ones, in short. Live classic? Possible. You envy someone who sat in the audience at this concert — such comfort and warmth… porter’s velvety voice with intimate intonations in strings, soft and transparent, swaying like tulle from the wind’s breath. Despite the fact that there is also a festive pomp here. The songs are mostly from NAT king Cole’s repertoire, plus a few of his own beautiful ones — “Hey Laura”,” No Love Dying”,” Don’t Lose Your Steam”,”When Love Was King”. It makes no sense to comment on the level of performance of NAT-king-Cole, but I note that porter’s great “Quizás, quizás, quizás” turned out like NAT’s. Maybe even better!Apple.Music, Yandex.Music, Deezermys of the moon “Lunar folk tales” / Lunar Folk talesin the new Year 2019-the release of the rarest genre of musical fairy tales in our region. Moscow group “Mys Luny” under the direction of singer and flautist Olga Scotia created a kind of folk-rock-psychedelic mix: a fairy tale about a Kolobok, as it is told… on the moon. To begin with, the Bun really rolled away from my grandparents, but — to travel the world. A modern character, Yes.On the way, he meets strudel (who tells him something in German), French baguette, Spanish olives and tomatoes… And, for example, Gogol’s blacksmith Vakula — this is another story — an emigrant from Eastern Ukraine, living in an English village, falls in love with a local girl, Jenny. The soundtrack of this story is the folk song “Blacksmith”, known to rock fans by the band Steeleye Span (this version is based here, actually). That’s it, there will be no more spoilers. These are adult-child fun-delusional things in a soft folk-rock frame. Featuring a bunch of unexpected guests, including Trey Gunn (King Crimson) himself. The album was released by the ArtBeat label in three versions: Russian, English and instrumental. The instrumental version, by the way, is also very narrative and colorful.
