Canned food and clones, or Where is the new classic

They say: they don’t argue about tastes. To be honest, I never understood the meaning of this expression. How can you argue about tastes? “My taste is better”? “The taste is there! – No taste! Give me ten proofs of the existence of taste! “Taste, as the Lord God, is a transcendent entity!”Nonsense, verbiage… And if someone says that they hate this or that musician, and I love him, for example, very much, then there is no reason to argue at all. You love, I don’t, and love is an inexplicable thing, and if it’s explicable, it’s not love at all, but a marriage of convenience, with all due respect.

Several reasons for this column. First, the new year, the new decade of the XXI century. The results are asking for themselves. But this is in General; in particular, for example, Denny lane comes to Russia with a band that “covers”… Creedence Clearwater Revival. What’s the connection? Denny lane-history itself, co-Creator of the bright and pleasant (bet with me!) of Paul McCartney’s album “Band on the Run”. I really hope that for such a cool dude, a tribute band is just a joke, and not a way to stay afloat during a sluggish Brexit. But in itself, such a “personnel decision” is, of course, a Rubicon in a certain sense.
We live, generally speaking, in an interesting era. On the one hand, there is a total retromania and an endless re — rationalization of past achievements, put on stream (I touched on this issue in the previous column). On the other hand, everyone understands that this is not 68 or even 72, and they are trying to create something new. But-new according to old recipes. As in the middle Ages: good is the idea that has already been expressed by saints, Church fathers and other authorities of the past. If you want to say something of your own, quote your predecessor deftly! Who also quoted someone… But what exactly happens to human tastes? This is really something new, and there is something to argue about. In Moscow, they bring a lot of bands and just solo bluesmen, and press releases always say about the spirit of so-and-so; “cool mix riffs Led Zeppelin with the sound of southern rock” and so on.To continue the conversation. Rival Sons recently performed in Moscow. Such straight traditionalists, heirs of the great rock tradition, who played in the same Moscow as the opening act for Black Sabbath… Yes, the sound is “true”, the songs themselves are a matter of taste. And last year everyone was running around with the Greta van Fleet band — these simple Boogie songs in the Zeppelin sound. Interesting? Of course, as a curiosity. For five or ten minutes. And many years ago there were such-Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Recorded strictly on tube equipment, on film (when it was not yet mainstream), CD design was stylized as vinyl in every possible way. Very cool done, visually and audibly, but to listen, in my unenlightened opinion, is boring. This is a personal opinion and value judgment, and I, by the way, personally knew the real fans of BRMC, who considered the band a real revival of “garage”, bit psychedelia, proto-punk, that’s all.In General, clone groups divide the music community in two. Opponents believe that “boring”, “this has already happened”. To sum up: boring because it has already happened. Defenders-well done, high quality, one in one, and if so-so this is it, the revival of rock, punk, garage, God knows what else.Rock fans resemble elderly musicologists who go to concerts with scores: they compare the performance with the musical text. Rock music in General resembles classical music, as it was interpreted in the second half of the XX century. At that time, a critical number of good-outstanding-great recordings of masterpieces had already accumulated, and it seemed that this was the way to play it. In other words, conservatories, if you’ll excuse the bad pun, were actually conserved.Despite the fact that the old and seemingly more conservative jazz has completely different trends. The musicians went wild. Late albums by all sorts of cheeky dudes with a name like Donnie McCaslin or Christian Scott atunde — it’s not at all clear that in terms of genre! A mix based on post-BOP: rap, broken rhythms, noise, ethnicity… Yes, and texts that resemble such near-philosophical “runs” and “carts”. No, there are, of course, copyists in jazz who take all the notes and touches of some great album by miles Davis or John Coltrane for a penny, but this goes along the line of curiosities. Well, good. I personally don’t need canned food or clones. And so-a matter of taste, of course. Which is not disputed.
